The intern manual contains pertinent information you need during your internship including the code of conduct, safety guidelines, common practices and procedures and parental permission forms. The internship activities are conducted in an office environment where everyone must behave in a professional manner. Below, you can review the code of conduct and safety guidelines to understand the general expectation.

All interns are required to follow the code of conduct. Students that violate the code (either intentionally or accidentally) are expected to self-regulate and take measures to ensure incidents will not be repeated. Students that do not comport themselves appropriately will be dismissed from the program.

How to stay in the program

  • Maintain academic performance in school. The internship coordinator will be reviewing all student grades quarterly. A drop in grades will require a consultation with the student on remedial measures to be taken. (Students do not have to have straight A's but their grades must not drop overall.)
  • Maintain clean disciplinary record in school.
  • Participate in activities and perform well in learning projects. Students will need to answer questions verbally and take written quizzes. Performance will be evaluated to determine if the program is too difficult.
  • Act within the guidelines required by the Internship Code of Conduct, Safety Guidelines and School District/Departmental policies.
  • Maintain an excellent attendance record within the program (minimum of 20 hours per month in attendance). Students that miss a session should make up the time on an alternate day.
(Note: Missing 20 hours of internship time during the first year without making it up will result in dismissal from the program.)

Code of Conduct

Code of Conduct for 2022/2023 school year.
  1. If you cannot attend or must come late, you need to communicate this directly to a networking staff member (preferably by e-mail) at least a day prior (when possible) to the scheduled meeting time.
  2. All students need to store personal items (backpacks, hats, instrument cases, etc.) in the designated storage compartments.
  3. Do not allow your wet umbrellas, wet outerwear, or shoes (wet or dry) to make contact with furniture, walls, or cabinetry.
  4. All students are issued ID badges. The badge must be present (even if not worn) at every meetup and it is a district requirement for interns to wear badges when visiting sites. The badges are to be kept in the IT department when not used.
  5. No texting or cell phone calls. If you need to take or make a call, excuse yourself from the room and take it into another area unless an exception is allowed for by a district staff member.
  6. When the internship meets during open business hours of the IT department, office decorum is to be followed. Off business hour meeting times can be more relaxed.
  7. The electronics workstations are to be maintained as static electricity protected environment and ESD precautions must be observed.
    1. No student is allowed to sit at ESD stations without being trained in proper procedures.
    2. Anybody at an ESD station must follow static protection guidelines by wearing anti-static gear. The IT department will provide an appropriate device to every student
    3. Non-grounded bystanders may not touch anything at the station.
    4. All electronic components are to be stored in anti-static receptacles and directly handled only when the user is grounded.
    5. No long sleeve shirts. Long hair is to be tied and kept out of the way. Dangling jewelry and lanyards must be removed.
  8. The soldering workstation is to be kept clean and organized. The tools must be inspected by staff for safety compliance. Safety precautions must be followed by all interns.
    1. No student is allowed to do solder work without being trained in proper procedures.
    2. Safety goggles must be worn, and the fume extractor used during all solder work.
    3. No long sleeve shirts. Long hair is to be tied and kept out of the way. Dangling jewelry and lanyards must be removed.
    4. All ESD precautions must be followed when working with ESD sensitive devices.
  9. Assisting others in the departments takes priority if you are called upon to help others.
  10. All equipment, tools and supplies are to be put away prior to leaving. Unless explicitly permitted by an internship coordinator, all equipment in storage may only be retrieved and stored by a coordinator or designated internship assistant.
  11. As you will be privy to IT activities, security measures and passwords not normally disclosed to students, you are not to share any detail of these measures (or even the fact that you are aware of them) with anybody without express permission of the IT department. This includes the status of any equipment, conversations or activities conducted in or on behalf of the IT department.

Safety Guidelines

All interns are to strictly follow any instructions provided by IT staff and always follow safety procedures listed here.

COVID Safety

  • Maintain 6’ social distance between yourself and your neighbors when possible
  • Face masks must be brought by all students. While wearing masks is not a requirement, the students will be expected to make sound judgement calls within our changing environment.

Injuries

  • You must report any injuries to the district staff member in charge.
  • Locate a first aid kit (in the IT department can be found to the left of the door leading to the loading dock).
  • Follow common first aid techniques such as flushing any injury with water before applying a bandage.
  • Do not hesitate to ask for assistance if needed.

Soldering Station

  • Do not lay an iron on any surface that was not specifically designed for soldering work. Always secure the tool in its holster when not in use. Shut off the device if it will not be used for more than 5 minutes.
  • Safety goggles must be worn during all solder work.
  • Do not inhale the fumes. Always use the fume extractor.
  • Maintain a solder feed of at least 4 centimeters from your fingers while soldering.
  • Follow ESD guidelines when working with electronic components.
  • No long sleeve shirts (securely rolling up sleeves is acceptable). Long hair is to be tied and kept out the way. Dangling jewelry and lanyards must be removed.

Lifting / Carrying / Climbing

  • Climbing ladders is permitted as a means of accessing a location such as an attic space or basement. When using ladders of more than 4 feet, it must be in the accompaniment of an IT staff member. The staff member must be at the base of the ladder whenever an intern is on the ladder.
  • Climbing to reach or install something should only be done with permission from staff. Never climb onto anything that is on wheels or is unstable.
  • When trying to handle something from a high storage place that weighs more than 5 kilograms, reach for it in such a way that it is never above your head. This could mean getting up higher or grabbing it while trying to keep it in front of your body. Passing the object down to another person should be done if possible and appropriate.
  • When lifting big and/or heavy objects, use proper lifting procedures where you should lift with your legs and not your back. This looks like a squat when doing it correctly.
  • Students must make sure to have good traction when walking or standing on smooth surfaces.

Transportation and work at other sites

  • All travel to other worksites will typically originate at the Shoreline Center and be driven by IT staff. To be able to travel in a district staff’s vehicle, a permission letter must be signed by your parent/guardian. A blanket permission form will cover all trips within the district. Note: Students are welcome to drive themselves if able.
  • Travel is typically restricted to the city limits of the City of Shoreline and the City of Lake Forest Park and planned well in advance providing sufficient time to inform guardians. Visits to school district buildings can happen spontaneously as technical support emergencies arise. Only interns at least 16 years old will be allowed to accompany on unplanned visits.
  • Travel sites will include
    • District sites including all school buildings, the school district warehouse & central kitchen, the bus transportation facility, and the Shoreline stadium.
    • Facilities run by other public agencies connected with school district. This includes Shoreline City Hall, The Shoreline Fire Department, The Shoreline Police Station, the Shoreline Recreation Center, and the Fircrest School.
    • Local businesses such as hardware stores, office supply stores or eateries.
  • For interns under 16 years old, there will always be an effort made to have an IT staff member and at least one other person in the vehicle when traveling. This guideline can be waived in the case of multiple vehicles traveling together or when a vehicle is packed with gear to the point where there is not enough room for extra occupants.
  • Interns are not to be left alone when at a worksite.
    • Stay near your supervising staff member or with the student group you are assigned to.
    • If you are requested to go to a room, make sure to follow directions exactly.
    • Radios will typically be used in these circumstances to maintain communication. Make sure your assigned radio is on when separating from the group.

Safety Dress Code

  • When visiting construction sites, closed toe shoes and long pants are required.
  • Some sites with construction activity may require wearing hardhats, safety vest and/or safety goggles. These will be provided by the IT department.
  • All interns must wear IT department supplied ID badges identifying who they are.
  • Manager-interns are issued t-shirts (and/or other wearable uniform), digital pass-badges, and keys which must be kept on their person at all times during site visits.
