Upcoming Session Information

The application process will open soon for students wishing to become interns in the IT Department during Winter of 2025. The term will start December 3rd, 2025. This opportunity is available to all students at Shorewood and Shorecrest. It is important to apply as early as possible as there are a limited number of seats in the program. Prospective interns need to meet the qualifications and interview before the start date.

Application and interview process

Students interested in the program must send an initial contact e-mail to the coordinator. The e-mail needs to state why you are interested in becoming an intern, what you hope to gain from the experience, and how you meet the stated qualifications (indicate your school, grade and any relevant classes or activities that demonstrate your technical competency). For the Spring 2026 session, there are 10 seats available. Selection will be based on qualifications and how soon you apply.

After initial contact and cursory confirmation of qualifications, students will have an interview and aptitude test scheduled.

The interview is informal (no suit/tie/dress requirements). This is an opportunity for the prospective intern to visit the facility and get a first-hand look at facilities, what resources are available, and what they would be doing. Time slots for interviewing occur after school or on Saturdays (see dates below). (Other time slots can be scheduled based on availability)

After the interview, students will take a written mathematics aptitude exam. The goal of the test is to confirm that the student has an understanding of the mathematical concepts required for the program. Computer science students should also have some basic programming experience (the examination questions are programming language agnostic so you can use whichever programming language you are most comfortable with). Example questions can be found here. The interview and exam process takes about 60 minutes.

The following are a list of important dates for the application process:

• June 8th - Last chance to interview (after school)
• June 10th - Orientation session (ID badge pictures, Intern Manual review, equipment assignment) after school Wednesday
• June 19th - Orientation session (CLI/OS introduction, laptop orientation) full day session.
• June 20th - Full day orientation & maintenance session Saturday (mandatory for all new students)
• June 24th - Orientation session (Computer science introduction) full day session.
• Summer Break (Dates TBD) - Full day sessions. Dates will be determined by students.

Students wishing to become an intern in the IT Department internship program should check the requirements of the program to verify qualifications.

Schedule

The following is a general schedule subject to change based on availability of coordinator and support staff. Accepted interns will be polled to arrange a schedule that best meets the constraints of the group. Meeting days during break may be substituted with a second Saturday meetup depending on group needs.

General Time Schedule

• September thru June - Wednesdays after school 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM (3:00 PM to 5:30 PM on full-day Wednesdays)
• September thru June - IT on Mondays. Engineering/CS on Fridays. (3:00 PM to 5:30 PM)
• September thru June - One Saturday per month 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
• June - Other day(s) after last day of school 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
• December - One day during Winter Break 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
• February - One day during Mid-Winter Break 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
• April - One day during Spring Break 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
• Summer - Multiple days during Summer Break 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Maintenance days do not count as a learning session and are an extra Saturday meetup (9:00 AM to 4:00 PM) during the month. On these days, students will do full maintenance, cleaning and inventory to keep things in order. Not all interns attend all maintenance days but all interns must attend at least two maintenance sessions a year. On maintenance days, students will reset learning kits for new students, update computer software, and handle other tasks to prepare for the upcoming season. On inventory days, students will cycle old equipment and supplies out of service and integrate new items into the learning program. Cleaning days, students will clean, dust, and wipe down all shelves, floors, tables, and other work areas.

Lab Maintenance Days

• December - Lab maintenance, cleaning and inventory 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (all new interns are required to attend)
• March - Cleaning 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (volunteers needed)
• June - Lab maintenance, cleaning and inventory 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (all new interns are required to attend)
• September - Cleaning 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (volunteers needed)
